“We are here today to celebrate the brilliant mathematical minds of our third, fourth, and fifth grade students,” said Whitney Harper, elementary math coordinator. “Welcome to Castleberry ISD’s sixth annual Multiplication Bee!”
Each year students in grades 3-5 across the district participate in the Multiplication Bee, a friendly competition led by the district’s elementary mathematics team to encourage mental math.
The first round of competition is held in homeroom classes on each campus. Students compete against homeroom peers for the top three places.
The top three students from each class later compete for the top three places in each grade level on their campus. The winners from the campus competition represent their elementary campus at the district level competition.
On Tuesday, students scribbled answers to the multiplication facts as quickly as they could on their worksheet trying to answer more than their peers in just one minute.
“Time's up! Put your pencils down,” said Harper. “We will now collect and score your sheets to determine the top winners.”
As students waited with anticipation, the judges scored each participant's worksheet. Parents, families, and teachers filled the Castleberry ISD boardroom where the district award recipients were announced.
“For third grade, in first place, from Joy James Elementary, we have Alan M.,” Harper announced. “Alan answered 48 math problems correctly in one minute.” The crowd cheered as Alan claimed his trophy.
The top multipliers from each grade level at the District Multiplication Bee will be recognized at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 6, 2022. Congratulations to the students who placed first, second, and third at the district level competition.
